NEWS: Tipperary County Council request hi-vis jackets be made mandatory for E-Scooters

Tipperary County Council is getting ready to ask the Minister for Transport to make a law that would require everyone riding e-scooters and e-bikes to wear high-visibility jackets.

In 2024, new laws made e-scooters legal in Ireland. Riders must be at least 16 years old and follow a speed limit of 20 km/h. E-scooters are not allowed on footpaths, and users cannot carry passengers.

Councillor JP O’Meara proposed this motion at the January Tipperary County Council meeting.

He asked the council to contact Minister Darragh O’Brien and push for new rules requiring every e-scooter and e-bike rider to wear a high-visibility jacket and use proper lights.

Councillor John Carroll supported the idea, saying he has almost had accidents with e-scooter users. He agreed that safety is a problem in the Nenagh area because many riders wear dark clothes and their lights are too weak.
