Simon Harris confirmed he would speak directly with the Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, and request that she examine the situation with the HSE before providing a response to Deputy Healy.

The Independent TD highlighted the urgent need to restore ophthalmology services in the region. A post-holder retired in August 2024, leaving the position vacant despite two recruitment drives. The role has since been upgraded from Community Ophthalmologist to Consultant Ophthalmologist.

Deputy Healy warned that almost 3,000 children and adults remain on a waiting list for urgent eye treatment. Patients with glaucoma are either yet to be seen or are awaiting follow-up care, with some at risk of losing their sight.

In the meantime, the HSE has advised patients with concerns to seek a referral from their GP to the Eye Care Services at University Hospital Waterford. This measure is expected to place further strain on existing services.
