Tipperary drama group to stage Marina Carr's 'haunting' play By The Bog of Cats

Fr Mathew Players return to the stage of New Inn Community Centre between February 10 and14 with their 2026 production of Marina Carr’s haunting and poetic drama - By the Bog of Cats.

Long celebrated for their commitment to high quality community theatre, the group promises unforgettable performances rooted in myth, emotion, and the rugged Irish landscape.

This year’s production boasts a powerful ensemble cast led by Judith Shortall as Hester Swane, a woman fighting fiercely for her home, her child, and her place in a world that seems determined to cast her aside.

She is joined by a talented company of long standing members and new members alike who bring depth and intensity to Carr’s richly drawn characters.

Producer Karl McHugh describes the play as “gripping, moving, and unmistakably Irish,” a story that blends humour, heartbreak, and the supernatural in a way that lingers long after the final scene.

Fr Mathew Players Chairperson Eddie Golden expressed pride in both the cast and the wider community that sustains the group year after year.

In October 2025, the Fr Mathew Players were honoured with a Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District Cathaoirleach Award recognising decades of dedication from performers, volunteers and supporters.

“The support the group receives means everything and the Fr Mathew Players group are delighted to hold such a respected place in the community,” said Eddie.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated creative and technical team is ensuring the production meets the high standard audiences have come to expect.

From set design by Sean Looby to PR, lighting, costumes, sound and a team of valued volunteers, the show is a testament to community collaboration at its finest, continuing a long standing tradition of show camaraderie.

Proceeds from the raffle at the February 11 show will support the New Inn Girls National School Sensory Room fundraiser.
By the Bog of Cats runs from Tuesday, February 10 to Saturday, February 14 at 8pm each night. Tickets are on sale from Eileen on (087) 6334381 and The Friary Pharmacy, Cashel.

Tickets costs €15 for the opening concession night performance on February 10. Tickets for all other evenings cost €20. With its blend of myth, music, emotion, and exceptional local talent, this is a production not to be missed. Age advisory 14+.
