Seamus Healy calls for more Garda in South Tipperary highlighting public safety

South Tipperary TD Seamus Healy has called for more Garda officers to be sent to the area, highlighting ongoing worries about public safety.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Healy pointed to two recent troubling incidents to strengthen his appeal.

On Friday, March 13th, a female Garda was assaulted while working alone at a shop in Cashel. Deputy Healy stressed that such solo shifts are becoming more common due to a shortage of Garda officers in Tipperary. Two members of the public intervened, but the Garda is now off duty. The suspect has been arrested and faces court proceedings. In another incident, a local resident reported being unable to contact Clonmel Garda station at night, prompting authorities to remind the public to dial 999 for urgent assistance.

Tánaiste Simon Harris said he will bring up the issue with Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan, who will then talk about Garda staffing levels with Commissioner Justin Kelly.

The Tánaiste strongly condemned any attack on a Garda, saying these acts are attacks on democracy and all of society.
