In a statement from gardaí they confirmed that gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision on Old Bridge in Clonmel on Wednesday March 25.
The collision, which involved a sulky and two cars, occurred shortly before 9:50am.
The incident took place in the Old Bridge area, where the horse had been pulling the sulky at the time. Images circulating on social media show the animal on the ground with the sulky still attached.
No injuries to persons were reported at the time, but the horse was deceased at the scene.
Enquiries by the gardaí are ongoing.
Animal welfare campaigners expressed anger on social media. On the Facebook page Action from Animal Welfare, one post read: “So here we go CLONMEL again … another poor animal, another accident endangering human and animal life... TDs, councillors, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves."
