Meitheal21, the Down Syndrome Tipperary community support organisation, recently celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on March 21.

World Down Syndrome Day is a special occasion that highlights the achievements of people with Down syndrome, amplifies their voices, and celebrates their valued place in community life.

An 'Equal Vibes' disco took place in Thurles with dancing, and laughter as members, families, and friends gathered to celebrate individuality and equality.

Equal Vibes is an Irish initiative founded by Ashling Delaney that provides inclusive, safe-space events for people with disabilities and additional needs, celebrating them through music, dance, and community.

Adding to the celebrations, the Tipperary senior hurling team proudly showed their support by wearing odd socks, a well-known symbol of World Down Syndrome Day.

Throughout the year, over 100 of the organisation’s members take part in a wide range of educational, social, and community programmes that support independence, confidence, and personal development.

These include opportunities in Speech and Language Therapy (SLT), Occupational Therapy (OT), educational tuition, drama, hospitality training, and social activities, all of which help members to develop skills, build friendships, and participate fully in their communities.

The idea behind wearing odd socks is a simple but powerful gesture - the socks are shaped like chromosomes, and wearing colourful or mismatched socks helps start conversations about Down syndrome.

Wearing odd socks is a fun and visible way for people to show support, celebrate difference, and promote inclusion.
