A major €5 million investment in fire service infrastructure across North Tipperary has been approved by Government, delivering a brand-new fire station headquarters in Borrisokane and significant upgrades for Roscrea.

The funding, signed off by Minister for Local Government James Browne and approved by Cabinet, will see €3 million committed to the development of a new, modern fire station headquarters in Borrisokane, while €2 million has been allocated for a major upgrade of the fire station headquarters in Roscrea.

Fianna Fáil TD for north Tipperary and northwest Kilkenny, Deputy Ryan O’Meara, has welcomed the funding, highlighting the importance of both projects for local communities.

“I am delighted that €3 million has been approved by government today for a brand-new fire station headquarters in Borrisokane.

“This is a project I have been following and working on for some time. Tipperary County Council acquired the site adjacent to the current station in Borrisokane for works and have been awaiting funding. This funding is now in place.”

“I am delighted to have major news for Roscrea today, with €2 million being signed off by Cabinet for a major upgrade of the Fire Station headquarters in Roscrea town.

“Minister James Browne, Minister for Local Government, brought the memo to Cabinet today and it has been agreed that €2 million will be invested in essential frontline services in Roscrea.

“In late February, I welcomed Minister Browne to Roscrea, and he visited a number of housing developments. I am very grateful to the Minister for all of his work and for backing Roscrea today.”

Local Nenagh councillor JP O’Meara also welcomed the announcement, highlighting its importance for both the fire service team and the wider community.

“This is great news for everybody in the Borrisokane area, but especially for all the hard-working staff in the station. I welcome this news that Minister James Browne has signed off on this project today.”

The Borrisokane investment will allow Tipperary County Council to proceed with the development of the new station, while the Roscrea upgrade will strengthen essential frontline emergency services for the town and surrounding areas.

These projects form part of the wider €328.5 million Fire Services Capital Programme announced by Minister James Browne, which includes further benefits for the county such as upgraded Compartment Fire Behaviour training facilities in Nenagh.

Deputy O’Meara also noted his support for Tipperary County Council’s campaign to recruit new firefighters for Newport Fire Station:

“I support the campaign that Tipperary County Council is currently running to recruit new firefighters for Newport Fire Station. It is a priority for me, as a local representative that Newport retains its fire station. I will continue to support Tipperary County Council as they ramp up their campaign to save Newport Fire Station.”
