Clonmel's new Shaw's department store that has created 20 new jobs, was officially opened by Mayor of Clonmel Cllr Pat English at the Showgrounds Shopping Centre this morning (Thursday, April 9).

A large crowd queued outside Shaw's 17th Irish store ahead of the Mayor performing the ribbon cutting ceremony to open the 9,000 sq. ft. store at 10am.

After he cut the ribbon, the eager shoppers flooded into the new shop that sells men's, women’s and children’s fashions and lingerie and also boasts beauty and homeware sections.

The store is running a 20% off offer on its opening day and refreshments laid on for customers including mini-cup cakes topped with Shaws Clonmel in icing.

In his speech, Cllr English welcomed the 162-year-old family run retail business to Clonmel and thanked the company for choosing his hometown as the location for its latest department store.

He said the people of the town were really “excited and delighted” with this new addition to the town's retail sector.

“It's a big plus for the Showgrounds Shopping Centre and the town going forward," the Mayor declared.

Shaws CEO Conrad Digan told the opening ceremony Shaws had been looking to come to Clonmel for quite a while and paid tribute to all the staff at their new Clonmel store on the “fantastic job” they have done in getting the store up and running.

He also thanked the people of Clonmel for their support of the company.

“Since we started here, we have received nothing but support from all the locals. I hope you all enjoy shopping here today and on many days in the future,” he added.

Special Olympics athletes from Scoil Aonghusa in Cashel were special guests at the official opening, which was also attended by Andrew Shaw of the Shaws family and his daughter Zoe and Clonmel Cllr Siobhán Ambrose.
