Harty Cup Review: Heartbreak for Nenagh CBS as three other Tipp schools qualify

Three Tipperary schools qualified for the quarter-finals of this year's Harty Cup after the final round of games were played in the group stages yesterday afternoon across Munster.

Thurles CBS, Our Ladys Templemore, and Cashel Community School all booked their places in the final eight, while Nenagh CBS were dealt late, late heartbreak as a last gasp goal in the other fixture in their group sent them out of this year's competition.

Nenagh looked all set to go through from Group A in second place after doling out a big beating to Cork's Gaelcholáiste Mhuire on a 4-27 to 0-14 score line, and all looked to be going to plan as CBC Cork were beating De La Salle by three points deep in injury time; however, a last gasp goal from Robbie Doherty of De La Salle drew the game, and sent Nenagh out in the process.

Darragh McCarthy top scored for the Nenagh school with a big total of 0-16 points, while there were good performances also from the likes of Jack O'Callaghan, Kieran Grace, Cian Connolly, and Danny Quinn.

In Group B, Our Lady’s Templemore saw off Rochestown College in Bansha by five points to book their spot along with a Thurles CBS team safely through. Jamie Ormond scored 0-9 for Our Lady’s with Ciarán O’Shea scoring 1-2, which clinched a first and second place slot for the Tipp schools.

Cashel Community School had already clinched their place in the final eight in the previous round, by virtue of their results in the opening two games of fixtures in the three team group, with a two-point victory for Ardscoil Rís, the reigning All-Ireland champions, over St Flannan’s in Sixmilebridge meaning the Limerick school advance from Group C along with Cashel.

Finally in Group D, Midleton CBS were inspired by Cork 2021 All-Ireland minor winner Jack Leahy, who shot 1-12, as they knocked out reigning Harty champions St Joseph’s Tulla. Patrick Walsh hit 0-5 for Midleton CBS. Both Midleton and St Colman’s move forward from this group. Full results below
