North Tipp GAA Notes: Big wins for Borris-Ileigh and Toomevara in U21 championship

Under 21 'A' Hurling: The second round of the North Under 21 'A' Hurling Championship took place last Sunday.

In Group 1, Borris-Ileigh continued their good form with a 1-13 to 2-8 win over Kiladangan. With the aid of a strong wind, Borris Ileigh took an early hold of the game with a Fintan Holland goal on the twelfth minute giving Borris a 1-5 to 0-2 lead.

The sides traded points for the remainder of the half before a Neil Cahalan goal (after great set up play from Darragh Tucker) just before half time left Borris with a 1-10 to 1-5 lead going into the break. Conditions worsened in the second half with a number of showers and this resulted in a low scoring second half.

A Conor Culhane goal for Kiladangan with five minutes along with a Conor Byrne free bought Borris lead back to a single point. However, a late Eddie Ryan free for Borris helped secure victory by two points.

Eddie Ryan top scored for Borris with eight points from frees whilst James Devaney scored two points from midfield and was prominent throughout. Conor Byrne impressed for Kiladangan with four points.

This win now secures Borris Ileigh a spot in the Semi Finals. Kiladangan will host Ballina this coming Sunday 20th November at 12 noon in Puckane with the winner joining Borris Ileigh in the Semi Finals.

In Group 2, Toomevara had a comfortable 2-18 to 2-8 win over Roscrea. The sides exchanged points in the opening stages of the game – four points each after the first quarter.

Eamon White found the back of the net for Toome on the fifteenth minute and they went onto dominate the remainder of the half after that score – outscoring Roscrea 1-8 to 0-0 with Darragh McCarthy scoring Toome’s second goal on the twenty third minute.

Toome enjoyed a 2-12 to 0-4 half time lead. To their credit, Roscrea rallied in the second half with two goals of their own but they were unable to claw back the Toomevara lead. Darragh McCarthy continued his good form with 1-11 for the victors with Eamon White also impressing with 1-2.
