The late Craig Breen
The funeral has taken place of Craig Breen, from Slieverue, who died in a pre-event test stage last week ahead of the Rally of Croatia.
His funeral cortége arrived this afternoon preceded by a Ford Escort Cosworth - the same as that driven by a childhood hero of his, the late Frank Meagher.
At the funeral service in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Ferrybank, his sister Kellie, who told mourners of her little brother’s achievements, but also of the man behind the helmet — the brother, son, and friend. She recalled stories of his childhood and his love for anything with wheels, and his joy in discovering his passion and realising his dreams.
A tricolour draped his coffin to acknowledge his role as an ambassador for Ireland on the international rally circuit. Symbols were brought forward to the altar at the funeral, including Craig’s rallying helmet, a trophy, gloves, and a box of teabags.
In his too-short life, Craig had a very successful rally career and represented his country with great pride. He was the 2012 WRC Super 2000 world rally champion, with multiple class wins. He was the WRC Academy champion in 2011.
He had a successful stint in the European Rally Championship, before debuting in the WRC in 2016, with many top-five and podium finishes to his name.
Tributes have been paid to him from across the world of rallying and sport.
The treasured son of Jackie and Ray, Craig will be sadly missed by his heartbroken sister Kellie, brother-in-law Darragh and his godson Bobbie, along with his extended family, cherished friends and all his motorsport family.
