Man in his twenties drowns in tragic Waterford incident

'A dark day': Rescue 115 involved in search for missing Coast Guard helicopter

A 21-year-old man has died in a drowning accident in Ardmore, Co Waterford earlier today, April 28. 

It is understood that five people got into difficulty while swimming at Whiting Bay in Ardmore at around 1:30pm this afternoon.

The Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter 117 was dispatched from Waterford along with the Ardmore and Youghal coastguard units and Youghal RNLI.

The 21-year-old man was airlifted to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

Gardaí confirmed that two of the others were rescued by the Coast Guard while two more of those in difficulty managed to make their own way to shore. 

A Garda statement said: "One of these individuals, a man aged in his early 20s, was taken by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

"No other injuries have been reported at this time. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
