A planning application for the construction of dozens of homes in a Waterford village has been refused.
The application - submitted by S&K Carey Ltd in May 2022 - was rejected by Waterford City and County Council this week (May 25, 2023) after the receipt of over 30 objections/submissions from Cheekpoint residents regarding the suitability of the development.
If granted, the development would have consisted of 51 dwellings of various sizes and configurations as well as pedestrian access, vehicular entrance and footpath alterations.
Car parking spaces, a bicycle parking area, public open space, street lighting, landscaping, boundary treatments, and foul and surface drainage were also planned at the site.
Objections submitted to the council highlighted concerns with overdevelopment of the area, the lack of capacity at nearby amenities including the local school, traffic configuration, and the consequences of a significant rise in population (currently 318 people).
One concerned resident stated in her objection that the development "will have a serious impact on the quality of life of the residents of Cheekpoint" while another stated the development would "exacerbate the health and safety concerns" surrounding a blind bend at the entrance to her home.
Another resident stated the number of proposed houses would "nearly equate" to the number of houses currently in the village, while a further objector noted the immediate visual environment would be negatively affected.
