Planning permission granted for historical vehicle display building in Waterford

Planning permission for the construction of a historical vehicle storage and display building in Waterford has been granted.

The application from the Commissioners of Public Works was submitted to Waterford City and County Council in July 2023, with approval granted at the end of August.

The construction will consist of an unheated single storey, glazed and covered shelter to display the Irish Coast Guard Historical Rocket Cart at The Lane in Knockmahon.

Permission also includes all associated site services, drainage, lighting, and works at the site.

According to Irish Maritime History, the Coastguard from 1800 to 1922 and coast lifesaving service from 1923 to 1992 maintained rocket rescue apparatus at strategic locations around the coast.

They rescued hundreds of sailors over the period of their existence. The last service using rocket apparatus was when the Ranga ran ashore at Slea head in March 1982.
