Waterford parish gets green light to construct building for ashes of dead parishioners

A Waterford parish has received planning permission to build a structure to hold the ashes of the deceased.

The application for the construction of a columbarium - submitted by Father Liam Power on behalf of the Parish of St Joseph, St Benildus and St Mary's - was approved by Waterford County Council on January 29, 2024.

A columbarium is a building or room with special spaces or shelves for holding urns containing the ashes of dead people.

Planning approval allows for the construction of the columbarium area as well as associated landscaping site works at the existing cemetery at St Mary's Church in Knockboy, Ballygunner.

The application was approved with two conditions.
