Former RTÉ Southeast Correspondent the face of Oxfam Ireland autumn campaign

Radio and TV presenter, Damien Tiernan has been announced as the Southeast Ambassador for Oxfam Ireland Second Hand September

Radio and TV presenter, Damien Tiernan has been announced as the Southeast Ambassador for Oxfam Ireland Second Hand September.
The campaign, now in its sixth year, calls on the public to sign up to buying second-hand for the month of September and supporting the campaign's call to "Dress for the world you want".

Oxfam Ireland is a charity close to the heart of the former RTE Southeast Correspondent, who now presents the flagship Deise Today show on Waterford Local Radio.
Damien has been supporting Oxfam since his teens when he entered a writing competition with a report on the work of the organisation.

“It’s a lovely quirk of fate,” Damien explains.
“I came across the work of Oxfam as a child, and they stuck in my mind as an incredible organisation who were doing important work supporting people in very poor and challenging places. So I wrote about them in a piece I entered for a competition, which I won! You could say it was a formative moment which set me off on a journalism career. My Dad still has the report in the attic!”

After entering the competition, young Damien went on to sign up for the Oxfam newsletter. He has been supporter of the charity ever since.
“In the early days I was inspired by the life-saving work Oxfam were doing on the ground, but as my career in journalism progressed, I learned of the wider work they were engaged in around advocacy in areas like taxing the rich and other social and human rights issues.
They align with many of my own interests and beliefs and I’m really proud to come on board with the campaign.
It’s a bit of fun, but there’s a really serious side to it too, with the fashion industry having a massive impact on the environment and people’s lives.
It’s staggering to imagine this, but the textile industry is the second-largest polluter in the world, after the oil industry, so making a conscious decision around how you shop, and choosing to buy second hand can play a part in tackling the impacts of climate change. It gives us all the opportunity to play our part.”
Oxfam Ireland is asking the people of Ireland to come on board with the campaign and share their stories throughout the month using the #OxfamIrelandSHS hashtag.
