There will be no vehicular access to the Square on Sundays.
Waterford City and County Council has confirmed details of several road closures to facilitate the Winterval 2024 Christmas Festival.
Winterval, Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, is returning for its 12th year with its biggest and most festive programme yet as Waterford has been designated European City of Christmas 2024
Beginning today, the festival will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays over the next six weeks before concluding on Monday, December 23, just in time for Christmas.
Some road closures came into effect last week and will remain in place until January 5, 2025 while the bus stop on Peter Street will also remain closed for the duration of the festival.

The following streets will be closed to traffic from 2:30pm until 7pm this Friday for the switching on of the Christmas Lights.
Barronstrand Street – L91091
Broad Street – L91092
Great Georges Street – L-90352
Peter Street – L-5531
Patrick Street – L-1525 (from its junction with Stephen Street)
Bakehouse Lane – L5530
The Taxi Rank on Peter Street will operate as normal until 5.30pm after which it will close until 7pm to facilitate the safe entry and egress of pedestrians to the event.
On Saturday, November 16, the following street closures will be in effect
The Mall (R680) - 3pm to 11pm
Mall Lane (L90023) 3pm to 11pm
Parnell Street (R680) - 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Catherine Street (R708) - 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Colbeck Street (L90025) - 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Johnstown (R860) (from its junction with Parnell Street to the South Entrance to Millars Marsh L90364) 5.30pm to 6.30pm
John Roberts Square, Barronstrand Street (L91092), Broad Street (L91092) and Great Georges Street (L90352) will all be closed on the following dates
Friday, November, 15 until 10pm on Sunday November 17
9pm on Thursday, November 21 until 10pm on Sunday, November 24
9pm on Thursday, November 28 until 10pm on Sunday, December 1
9pm on Thursday, December 5 until 10pm on Sunday, December 8
9pm on Thursday, December 12 until 10pm on Sunday, December 15
9pm on Tuesday, December 17 until 10pm Monday, December 23
Access to Jenkins Lane and Little Patrick Street carparks shall be via Thomas Hill and Meeting House Lane. Access to the Quays shall be via Ballybricken or Penrose Lane
Between now and Christmas, Friday morning access to John Roberts Square will be as normal but there will be restrictions each Saturday with access and egress for commercial businesses available until 11am via Barronstrand Street (Clock Tower Entrance) only.
There will be no vehicular access to the Square on Sundays and access to Barronstrand Street for the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity each Saturday evening and Sunday morning for Mass shall be facilitated via a controlled access and egress point via Barronstrand Street (Clock Tower Entrance) only.
There will be no vehicular access to the Square on Sundays.
