Family dinners are fading fast in Waterford, with new research showing 74% of households here spend less time at the table together than they did ten years ago.
The survey, carried out by recipe box provider HelloFresh, highlights how modern routines are eroding one of the county's oldest traditions. While 80% of families said they wish they could sit down for more meals together, everyday pressures are getting in the way.
Parents point to lack of time (59%), household chores (27%) and children's packed schedules (20%) as the main barriers.
The drop is felt most among younger parents.
More than 80% of those aged 25–34 admitted they spend less time at family dinners than in the past, showing how quickly the ritual is slipping in households with young children.
Psychologist Allison Keating said even small changes can make a difference: "Sitting down to dinner as a family is far more than a daily routine; it is a proven way to nurture children's health, well-being, and development.
"Even one additional family meal each week can create a realistic and lasting change, fostering resilience, social skills, and parent–child connection that will benefit children well beyond the dinner table."

HelloFresh is now urging families to reclaim mealtime with its "Nothing Beats Dinnertime Challenge" this September. The idea is simple: commit to just one more shared meal each week.
"As summer ends and busy routines resume, it's often quality dinnertimes that slip through the cracks," said Hannah Duxbury-Pardoe, Head of Product Operations at HelloFresh.
"But the evidence is clear: sharing a meal – whether it’s preparing it, cooking together, or simply sitting down as a family – does more than nourish. It strengthens relationships, improves communication, and supports emotional well-being."
