The long-awaited redevelopment of Waterford Airport has taken a big step forward, with the Government confirming the project can now submit its business case for funding.
The move clears the way for the airport to progress its plans to lengthen and widen the runway, paving the path for larger aircraft and new routes to finally return to Waterford and the South East.
The update was revealed after Carlow-Kilkenny TD John McGuinness pressed Minister Darragh O'Brien for clarity on the project.

Minister O'Brien confirmed that Waterford Airport has been formally invited to put forward a Preliminary Business Case, a requirement before State funding can be released.
Deputy McGuinness hailed the development as "a crucial shift from aspiration to action" and said it proves the Government is serious about delivering on its 2019 promise.
"The redevelopment of Waterford Airport is more than just a transport project; it is a critical piece of economic infrastructure for the entire South-East region," he said.

"Delivering a runway capable of handling larger aircraft will unlock tourism, boost foreign direct investment, improve regional connectivity, and provide a major economic stimulus for Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, and the surrounding counties."
Local leaders have long argued that a redeveloped runway would be transformative for the region, providing Waterford and its surrounding counties with direct international connectivity and a stronger pitch for foreign direct investment.
McGuinness added that he will continue to work with Ministers Mary Butler and John Cummins, alongside the Council and stakeholders, to keep the project moving.
