'Meaningful and impactful' day of shared learning held at SETU Waterford
South East Technological University’s Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning hosted a Shared Learning Day in Waterford as part of the cross-sectoral Community of Practice, 'More Than Words.'
The event at SETU Arena brought together more than 93 teachers and Special Needs Assistants from DEIS schools in Waterford.
SETU lecturers and representatives from the Teaching Council were also present to engage in collaborative professional learning focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Led by Dr Caroline McGarry, from the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning, the Community of Practice is a partnership between SETU, the Waterford Education Support Centre, and participating DEIS schools.

The initiative was established to explore UDL in real classrooms through shared inquiry, lesson study, and reflective practice.
"It has since grown into a sustained collaboration grounded in a shared commitment to inclusive practice," said Dr McGarry.
Teachers from Portlaw National School, St Stephen’s De La Salle BNS, and St Ursula’s Primary School took part in the planning and facilitation of the day.
"Their preparation and openness in sharing their experiences supported meaningful and practical professional dialogue across the group," Dr McGarry added.
The Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning wishes to acknowledge the ongoing partnership with Dr Brian Barron, Director of the Waterford Education Support Centre, as well as the principals and teachers who continue to drive this collaborative work.
Appreciation was also expressed to the Teaching Council Féilte Bursary, which supports the continued development of the More Than Words Community of Practice.
The successful delivery of the Shared Learning Day was made possible through SATLE funding, which provided essential support for the event.
Planning is already underway for 'More Than Words: Part 2,' with partners looking forward to building on the strong foundations established this year.
