Waterford’s next generation of environmental champions were celebrated at City Hall this week as secondary schools from across the city and county were recognised for their efforts in keeping local communities litter-free.
The Schools Litter Challenge, now in its fifth year, brought together 14 secondary schools from across Waterford, encouraging students to identify litter black spots in their communities and carry out regular clean-ups over a six-week period.

Abbey Community College in Ferrybank was named overall winner of the challenge, receiving the €1,500 top prize sponsored by Tom Murphy Car Sales Toyota. Students and teachers from the school were presented with their award at a special reception attended by the Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Séamus Ryan, alongside Tom Murphy Car Sales, Toyota brand ambassador and Waterford Camogie All-Star, Niamh Rockett.
Addressing those in attendance, Mayor Ryan praised the commitment shown by students throughout the challenge, saying: “The Schools Litter Challenge not only brings far-reaching benefits to our communities, but it also shines a spotlight on the enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work of the participating schools.”
“I would like to commend the students and their teachers for making a real difference. Come rain, hail, or shine, these students carried out their litter-picking tasks with unwavering diligence, keeping their local areas litter-free, protecting the environment, and contributing meaningfully to their communities,” he added.

Mayor Ryan also highlighted the importance of encouraging environmental responsibility at a young age, noting that it was “refreshing and reassuring to see a generation of young people so dedicated and passionate about enhancing their surroundings and taking proactive steps to reduce the environmental harm caused by litter, particularly single-use plastics.”
Certificates of participation were also presented on the day to De La Salle College, Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School, St Angela’s Ursuline Convent, St Paul’s Community College and Waterpark College, recognising the efforts of students and teachers who took part in the initiative.
Ella Ryan, Environmental Awareness Officer with Waterford City and County Council, also congratulated participants, saying: “Well done to all the students and their teachers for once again embracing this initiative with such remarkable energy, passion, and commitment. Your efforts in creating cleaner, greener communities have far-reaching benefits.”
The Schools Litter Challenge is sponsored by Tom Murphy Car Sales Toyota in association with Waterford City and County Council and Waterford Chamber, with equipment including bags, gloves and litter pickers provided to participating schools.
