Waterford's River Suir takes centre stage in major new TG4 documentary series next month

A major new documentary series exploring Waterford’s River Suir and the communities along its banks will hit screens next month.

Cois Siúire, a four-part Irish-language series, is set to premiere on TG4 on Wednesday, April 1 at 9.30pm, placing one of Ireland’s most important waterways and the people who live alongside it, centre stage on television.

Presented by historian and arts practitioner Dr Colm Mac Gearailt, the series follows his journey along the 183km-long River Suir, travelling by canoe from its source at the Devil’s Bit in County Tipperary all the way to the Celtic Sea.

Along the way, he meets historians, artists, farmers, anglers and community custodians whose lives are shaped by the river, uncovering the stories, landscapes and traditions that have developed along its banks for centuries.

The River Suir flows through several towns before reaching Waterford city, and the new series shines a light on the river’s role in the region’s geographic, economic and cultural development.

Produced by Cormorant Films, the documentary draws inspiration from writer Annraoi Ó Liatháin’s travelogue Cois Siúire, written almost fifty years ago.

The series also features an original score composed by Liam Ó Maonlaí of the Hot House Flowers, bringing an atmospheric soundtrack to the story of one of Munster’s great rivers.
