A “parking overflow” at University Hospital Waterford is having knock-on effects for local businesses, a council meeting has heard.

Social Democrats councillor Mary Roche spoke on the subject at the March meeting of the Metropolitan District.

Cllr Roche: “Can I ask do we engage or can we engage at all with the hospital regarding the parking situation?

“I know that’s not directly within our purview but the overflow of parking is really seriously beginning to affect the businesses and residential areas around the hospital.

“It’s acute for people who visit the hospital and for people who are in hospital whether it’s appointments or whatever.

“But it’s having a spill over effect on our areas, so I’m just wondering if we can engage with them and establish if they have any plans or encourage them to come up with some plans on that issue.”

In response to Cllr Roche, Senior Engineer Paul Johnston said that Waterford City and County Council does not regularly engage with the hospital on the issue.

However, he said the council would “certainly be doing that from now on”. “I can assure you of that”, he added.
