An update has been provided on the future of Plunkett Station in Waterford city, ahead of the opening of the Transport Hub on the North Quays.

Social Democrats councillor Mary Roche enquired about the future ownership of the building at the April plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Roche said: “Can I ask have we had any interaction with Iarnród Éireann over a possible use for Plunkett Station once they move down to their new station on the North Quays?

“Will they be maintaining their offices at Plunkett Station or will there be another use for that building?

In response to Cllr Roche, Acting Director of Services Sean Dobbs said the council has not had any discussions with Iarnród Éireann.

Mr Dobbs stated: “On Irish Rail and Plunkett Station, we certainly haven’t had any formal discussions with Irish Rail.”

However, he went on to say that Irish Rail is expected to maintain ownership of the station building.

“It’s a matter for Irish Rail. My understanding is that Irish Rail will continue to use Plunkett Station for their own staff and their own internal works.

“So it will be active for Irish Rail’s own use,” he concluded.

Finishing works are continuing to the new Transport Hub on the North Quays, including mechanical and electrical fitout and other internal finishing works.

The platforms are described as “substantially complete” and works are being completed to the northern plaza and set-down areas.

These works include landscaping, lighting, street furniture and bicycle facilities.

Works on the station’s southern entrance will also proceed in 2026, and in tandem, the audits and approvals processes for the new station and rail infrastructure will progress through 2026.

Meanwhile, Iarnród Éireann will work on the installation of new trackside signalling, electrical and telecoms equipment through 2026 and into Q1 of 2027.

It is hoped that the completion of these works will facilitate the opening of the train station in 2027.
