Met Éireann weekend weather latest amid subzero plunge and major u-turn
Met Éireann has updated its weather forecast for the weekend and next week after temperatures dipped below zero on Thursday night.
Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel said Thursday night was "a bitterly cold night for many with air temperatures dipping down to -1 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest night of Autumn 2024 thus far with a widespread grass frost and localised air frost also."
However, despite the overnight drop, temperatures look like picking up over the next few days and into next week, according to official Met Éireann forecasts.
They say: "Tonight [Friday] will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle and patches of mist and fog. It will become largely dry by morning. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 14 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds, fresh at times in the west.
"Most areas will be dry tomorrow morning [Saturday], with some sunny intervals in the east and south. Rain will then move into parts of Munster, Connacht and west Ulster, with a few showers elsewhere. Milder and breezy tomorrow with highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees and moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds.

"Rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain or showers early [on Saturday] night. The showers will slowly die out with some clear spells developing from the west as southwesterly breezes change westerly. Lows of 10 to 13 degrees.
"Sunday will start out mostly cloudy and damp across the east and south with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Drier and brighter conditions with sunny spells and just a few showers in the west and north will gradually extend southeastwards as the day goes on, although cloud and drizzle may linger all day near the south coast. Highs of 15 to 18 degrees with light to moderate westerly breezes," Met Éireann added.
They say it will be "mainly dry on Monday with cloudy periods and sunny spells and just isolated showers. Highs of 17 to 20 degrees in light southerly breezes.
"A mix of cloud and clear spells at first [on Monday night]. Cloud increasing from the south along with a few showers. A mild night with temperatures no lower than 14 to 16 degrees in light to moderate southerly breezes.
"Current indications suggest a mostly cloudy start on Tuesday with a few showers will gradually give way to warm sunny spells developing during the afternoon and evening. Staying warm with highs of 18 to 21 degrees with light winds," they concluded.
