Met Éireann pinpoint return of subzero temperatures amid Ireland weather update

Met Éireann had indicated that freezing temperatures will return amid another weather u-turn after the weekend.

After a number of very cold mornings, Friday and the weekend will be milder, but subzero will make a comeback early next week.

They say Friday will be "breezy and wet at times with outbreaks of rain in the west and southwest, spreading nationwide by midday. Drier weather with sunny spells will extend from the southwest through the afternoon, with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle following into the southwest by late evening. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in moderate to fresh, strong at times, southerly winds.

"Mostly cloudy with limited clear spells and areas of mist and drizzle at times [Friday night]. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds."

They further predict it will be "cloudy" on Saturday with areas of mist and drizzle around during the morning.

"More persistent rain will develop in the south and west on Saturday afternoon, before extending to many parts of the country during the evening. A mild day with highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees in fresh and gusty southerly winds.

"Further outbreaks of rain on Saturday night, clearing to scattered showers. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds."

"Clear spells and scattered showers on Sunday night. Feeling cooler with lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees."

Looking into next week, they reckon night-time temperatures could hit zero or below again.

"Mostly dry [on Monday] with long spells of sunshine and just isolated showers. Moderate to fresh northwest winds ease light by evening. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees," the forecast reads.

"Mostly dry with clear spells overnight on Monday. Outbreaks of rain will arrive to the west and southwest by dawn. Colder than previous night with lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees, with mostly light southeasterly winds.

"Outbreaks of rain will spread eastwards through the morning [on Tuesday], clearing the west by afternoon with sunny spells and isolated showers following. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees, with moderate southeasterly winds veering northwesterly as the rain clears."
