LIVE: One county pinpointed for spring snow amid miserable Ireland weather u-turn
One county in Ireland could see snow this week after a prolonged dry and largely warm spell on weather. The prediction from Ireland Weather Channel forecaster Cathal Nolan comes amid a risk of flooding later this week in a cruel twist of fate for the Easter weekend.
"I didn’t think I’d be typing this word again following our 23 degree heat last week, but there’s growing confidence in a late spring snowfall event over the Wicklow mountains tonight and into the early hours of Wednesday as a small area of low pressure passes its way up the Irish Sea, with a cold northerly flow digging in on the west side of this area of precipitation," Cathal told his followers.
"The snow line looks like dropping to an altitude of 500 metres for a time on Wednesday morning, with accumulations likely on mountains above this level. Some models indicate anywhere between 10-20cm is possible. Naturally Ireland’s Weather Channel plans on being there to witness this event, so stay tuned for updates during the day."
There is some relief for the rest of the country with no snow, but the precipitation will arrive. Cathal explained: "Meanwhile at lower levels this will fall as rain, with a risk of some spot flooding in some eastern coastal counties with between 15-20mm of rainfall possible.
"The areas that will see the greatest falls of rain will be Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Meath, Louth, Down, Antrim and Armagh. Heavy rain is possible in other parts of Leinster and Ulster too.
"Meanwhile on Thursday night, following a mostly settled day Thursday, some heavy thundery outbreaks of rain will develop in the south of the country, spreading countrywide overnight and into Friday, with a risk of localised flooding and isolated thunderstorms. Munster and South Leinster seem most at risk just now, but more details will follow on that later," Cathal forecast concluded.

Similarly, Met Éireann says it will be "rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain along the eastern coasts" on Wednesday.
"Staying dry across much of the country however with occasional sunny breaks. Later in the afternoon sunny spells will develop countrywide with a few isolated showers pushing in along Atlantic coastal counties. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with northwesterly breezes," they added.
The Met Éireann forecast continues: "Cloudy with a few isolated showers early in the night. More persistent rain will linger along the east of the country but clear and drier spells will develop overnight. Cold with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with light breezes.
"Quite a mix then for Thursday with showers across the western half of the country and sunny spells in the east from early in the morning. Later however the showers will become widespread for a time before a band of heavy rain moves in from the south. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light winds.
"Clear spells developing late into the night with some patchy cloud persisting along coastal areas. Another cold night with lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees and light winds.
"Cloudy with widespread rain, heavy at times too [on Friday]. There will be little in the way of dry or sunny weather with conditions likely to remain very unsettled through the day. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with southerly breezes.
"Cloudy and wet with rain, heavy and persistent through the night. A very mild night with lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees and blustery winds too.
"Looking ahead to the weekend and its likely to remain somewhat unsettled with rain and blustery winds. Temperatures are likely to remain average for this time of year," Met Éireann concluded.
