A solicitor told Derry Youth Court there was 'a misconception' that electric bikes were toys.

Solicitor Derwin Harvey was speaking as he represented a 17-year-old youth who was charged with careless driving and having no insurance while riding an electric scrambler bike on August 7 last year.

The court was told that the youth filmed and uploaded footage of himself riding the machine and was identified.

When interviewed he made full admissions.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey told the court that a friend of the youth had been given a scrambler as a gift and lent it to him.

The solicitor said that these machines were becoming more and more prevalent.

He added that it was fortunate there was no one else in the vicinity when his client was on this machine and asked the court to accept there was a degree of 'immaturity'.

District Judge Suzanne Rice said tge speed of the vehicle was clearly at the higher end of the careless driving scale and added it was only short of dangerous driving.

She said it was 'only by the grace of God' no one had been injured.

The judge said that anyone riding these machines put themselves and others at risk.

The youth was disqualified from driving for 6 months and fined £100.
