A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with disorderly behaviour in Altnagelvin Hospital.

Darragh McGrath (18) of Lisnafin Park in Strabane was charged with the offence that were said to have occurred on February 23.

Police were initially called to the scene by staff who reported that McGrath was being abusive to staff and patients.

McGrath had originally appeared that morning by the door of the hospital, smoking and with a bag of alcohol, eventually having to be removed by police before later returning.

A doctor reported that McGrath had attempted to enter the hospital via a Staff Only door, pushing his way past the doctor when he was refused entry.

He was also shouting abuse to a paramedic that had arrived with a patient in an ambulance.

By the time police arrived McGrath was in a wheelchair in A&E and admitted to having alcohol at the time of the initial incident.

McGrath has 39 previous breaches of bail in Youth Court, what Deputy District Judge Chris Holmes called a 'classic child in care record'.

Defence Barrister Stephen Nicol told the court that McGrath had been thrown out of care upon turning 18 and had admitted himself into treatment for his issues with alcohol in Newry.

He also added that McGrath had gone to the hospital to seek treatment for his mental health issues.

Bail was granted with a curfew and conditions that McGrath does not go into any hospital unless in an emergency and that he abstain from alcohol in public.

He will appear again on March 25.
