35-year-old jailed for assault on police on Derry's Peace Bridge

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for two assaults on police who were trying to help him.

Conor Dean (35) of no fixed abode admitted two assaults on police that occurred on October 15.

The court heard that police responded to a concern for safety report about a male on the Peace Bridge.

They found Dean lying on the bridge with blood coming from his head and mouth.

Police spoke to him and he became aggressive and had to be handcuffed.

Dean headbutted one officer and elbowed another.

Defence counsel Michael Donaghy said this was 'disgraceful behaviour' and added that his client wished to apologise.

He said alcohol was a factor in the offences.

Dean was sentenced to a total of 12 weeks in custody.
