74-year-old man charged with giving police false name banned from driving and fined

Patrick McGonigle of Beraghvale in Derry was charged with taking a car without the owner's permission, driving without a license, driving without insurance and obstructing police
A 74-year-old man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with giving police a false name when stopped for a number of driving offences.
Patrick McGonigle of Beraghvale in Derry was charged with taking a car without the owner's permission, driving without a license, driving without insurance and obstructing police after police pulled him over on December 31 last year while they were patrolling the Skeoge Road.
McGonigle initially gave police a false name when asked and claimed he had a Southern driving licence.
Police checked with the Gardai, only to find no record of the name given.
He later admitted that the car was his daughter's and he had taken it without her permission while she was away.
Defense solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that McGonigle's first conviction occurred at the age of 73, adding that he did at one stage have a driving licence 'many years ago'.
He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £600.
