Boosted by school stars and senior recruits, Ryan O’Neill’s side looks to cement Derry’s status as a rising hurling power

The Derry U20 hurlers are just 60 minutes away from a second All-Ireland title in three years as they prepare to face Roscommon in a repeat of the 2023 decider in the Fulfil All-Ireland U20 B Richie McElligott Cup Final at Kingspan Breffni Park at 1pm on Saturday.

The Derry men battled to a memorable 3-18 to 2-15 victory over the Rossies in 2023 in Croke Park, with the likes of Ruairí Ó Mianáin, Jack Cassidy and James Friel central to that success.

A second title in three seasons would underline the progress being made within Derry’s hurling development pathway and provide another significant boost to the county’s underage game, coming shortly after St Patrick’s College Maghera captured the Paddy Buggy Cup title in March.

Ryan O'Neill’s side will hope to replicate the momentum generated by the 2023 triumph, which helped that group push on to secure a first Ulster U20 Hurling Championship title since 2017 the following season, only the county’s seventh provincial at the grade.

With a similarly youthful age profile across the current panel, the opportunity exists for this group to follow a similar trajectory.

It was a challenging Ulster campaign for Derry this season, yielding two wins from five outings. A last-gasp opening-night defeat to Tyrone left O’Neill’s men facing an uphill task from the outset.

However, impressive victories over Donegal and Wicklow kept qualification hopes alive heading into their final round fixture against Down. On that occasion, however, a more physical and experienced Mourne side proved decisive, running out 2-25 to 0-12 winners and leaving Derry in fourth place overall.

A bye in the Richie McElligott Cup quarter-finals saw Derry face the O’Donnell County once again at the semi-final stage, where they produced an impressive display in difficult conditions at Owenbeg to secure a convincing 1-19 to 1-5 victory and book their place in another All-Ireland decider.

Roscommon, meanwhile, have recorded notable wins over neighbours Mayo and Tyrone to reach the final.

A 2-20 to 3-11 victory over Mayo set up a semi-final meeting with the Red Hand county in Garvaghey, where Roscommon eventually prevailed after extra time in a thrilling 5-10 to 1-18 contest.

First-half goals from Gavin Staunton, Conor Morris and David Mannion helped the Connacht side establish a 3-2 to 0-9 interval lead. Although nothing could separate the pair at full time, Roscommon pulled clear in extra time to secure their fourth Richie McElligott Cup final appearance in five seasons.

Derry bring momentum into the contest following St Patrick’s College Maghera’s recent All-Ireland success, with three members of that victorious panel involved with the U20 squad.

Kevin Lynch’s pair Cailean Gallagher and Conor McKenna, along with Slaughtneil forward PJ Glover, are all fresh from Paddy Buggy Cup glory and bring huge quality into the panel.

They will be joined by Emmett Og McKeever who was recently selected for a Danske Bank Ulster Schools Future Stars All-Star award for his performances with Gaelcholaiste Dhoire in this year's Mageean Cup.

Several U20 panellists have also stepped up to the senior inter-county level this season following sixteen departures from Johnny McGarvey’s Christy Ring Cup squad over the winter. Tiarnán Melaugh, Ruairí Biggs and Ryan McGarvey have all gained valuable experience during the league and championship campaigns to date.

This Saturday’s clash at Kingspan Breffni Park presents the Derry youngsters with the opportunity to secure a second All-Ireland titles within the space of eight weeks, which would be unprecedented success for underage hurling in the county.

O’Neill and his players will be hopeful of rising to the challenge against a serious Roscommon side in what promises to be a fiercely contested final.
