With less than four weeks until the Local Government Elections take place (Thursday, 18th May), locally we will see a total of 40 councillors elected onto Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The Alliance Party will field a candidate in each of the seven local wards - Ballyarnett, Derg, Faughan, Foyleside, Sperrin, The Moor, and Waterside.

“Alliance is now the third-largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly”, says local party chair Councillor Philip McKinney.

“We meet a lot of support across Derry Strabane Council area and we are giving local voters the opportunity to increase the number of Alliance councillors locally  -  as well as across all 11 District Councils".

"The Alliance Party recently helped local Alliance members to open an office here in Derry", notes Cllr McKinney.   "It is an indication of Naomi Long's wish to have an Alliance presence all over N Ireland.   The West has its own needs and opportunities and Alliance is part of that".

The local Alliance candidates in the 18 May election are as follows:- Ballyarnett: Colm Cavanagh; Derg: Anne Murray; Faughan: Rachael Ferguson; Foyleside: Danny McCloskey; Sperrin: Mel Boyle; The Moor: Michael Downey; and Waterside: Cllr Philip McKinney.

Councillor Rachael Ferguson said: “Money-wise this is a very difficult time for local families. Obviously Derry-Strabane Council can’t control the national economy.

“But there are some things that we can do to help bring some relief to struggling local families and individuals. And at the same time we have to give every possible support to local businesses because it’s the business community that provides jobs and pays the wages and contributes the rates and taxes that support us all“.placeholder image

Michael Downey: Alliance candidate for “The Moor”.

“Alliance aims to be the only Party standing in every District Electoral Area of every Council across NI”, says Cllr McKinney.

“We hope that voters will continue the ‘Alliance Surge’ that has multiplied the numbers of Alliance MLAs and councillors since 2019 will continue”.
