Bail denied for Derry man with 145 previous convictions who spat in officer's eye

PSNI officer required 16 weeks treatment after Gerard Mullan (39) of Duncreggan Road was said to have spat in his eye while being arrested
Derry Magistrates Court has been told a police officer will require 16 weeks treatment after a man was said to have spat in his eye while being arrested.
Gerard Mullan (39) of Duncreggan Road in Derry was arrested after police were called to the scene of two men fighting in the early hours of August 31.
The court heard that police attempted to take Mullan, who was under the influence of an intoxicating substance, to his mother's house and later to the hospital.
While in the police car, Mullan was said to have broken the handle of the door and proceeded to kick an officer.
He then allegedly spat in the eye of another, and a police officer said this meant the officer would require sixteen weeks of treatment due to Mullan's medical condition that he denied having.
Police objected to bail as Mullan has 145 previous convictions, including several for assaulting police, and they believe he is at clear risk of reoffending.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that Mullan had been out of custody for around six weeks and was seeking treatment for his addiction issues.
Bail was denied and he will appear again on September 26.
