Bomb made safe in Derry security alert
A suspicious object which sparked a security alert in Derry’s Waterside area last night was a “viable device,” police have said.
The device was found in the driveway of a house in Gelvin Gardens in the Trench Road area at teatime.
The alert has now ended and around 20 families evacuated from their homes have been allowed to return.
The device – believed to be a pipe bomb - was made safe by British army bomb disposal experts and been taken away for forensic examination.
Those responsible for planting the bomb have been widely condemned.
