Concerns over plans to create retail spaces in two of Derry's top tourist attractions

Concerns have been expressed about the development of retail spaces within two of Derry’s top tourist attractions.
A business case for the creation of retail and merchandising space in the Guildhall and the Tower Museum was granted by members of Derry City and Strabane’s District Council’s Business and Cultural Committee late this afternoon.
In a report to committee members, Linda Williams, the council’s Head of Marketing, said a tourist information point at the main entrance of the Guildhall would no longer be required as a new Visit Derry office was to be relocated from Foyle Street to Waterloo Place this year.
She said this would allow for a larger retail and merchandising area to be installed at the Guildhall while the retail space at the Tower Museum would also be further developed to “coincide and compliment this.”
It is envisaged that the new retail space will lead to increased visitor numbers and income, as well enhancing the customer experience upon visiting the two attractions.
From March to December last, the Guildhall and Tower Museum's net income was £2,805.
Ms Williams said there was a requirement for quotations from “suitably qualified, experienced and specialised” consultants within the tourism and retail sector.
She added: “In order to ensure the high quality and professional retail development project for the Visitor Services buildings, the successful supplier will produce a robust business plan containing market research, best practice, cost projections, timescales, merchandising, and supplier selection.
“The quotation request will not exceed £10,000 and will also include several days consultancy fees during the implementation of the retail space and post implementation to ensure future success.”
Sinn Fein Cllr Patricia Logue raised concerns over impact on private retailers in the city.
Her concerns were echoed by SDLP Cllr John Boyle while Sinn Fein Cllr Maoliosa McHugh said £10,000 was “excessive.” for that Williams said money would be used for parts of excercise, not just looking at what they should be selling.
