Adam O'Connor (26) of Dervock Place in Derry appeared charged with failing to comply with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order by notifying police of his address
A convicted rapist from the Republic was allegedly living in Derry with a 16-year-old girl the local Magistrates’ Court heard today.
Adam O'Connor (26) of Dervock Place in Derry appeared charged with failing to comply with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order by notifying police of his address.
A police officer connected the accused to the charge and this was challenged by defence solicitor Oliver Roche.
The police officer said the defendant had been residing in Derry with a 16-year-old girl who had been reported missing in the Republic for the past two weeks.
The solicitor asked had the 16-year-old refused to make a statement and the court heard she hadn't and had since been brought back to Dublin by Gardai. The officer said that police believed there was evidence that O'Connor had failed to notify police he was in the North.
The police officer added that the defendant's sister had said that he had been residing here for six weeks.
District Judge Suzanne Rice said she was satisfied that the connection had been made out.Bail was opposed due to no suitable address as the officer said the defendant's sister had issues with her landlord.
The officer said there had been no attempt to contact either the PSNI or the Gardai.
Mr Roche said the evidence against his client was 'weak' and he had no previous for this type of offending.
Judge Rice that there was no suitable address and there was a risk of re-offending. Bail was refused and O'Connor was remanded in custody to appear again on August 13.
