Council agrees to name new Brandywell stand after the late Mark Farren

The new stand to be built as part of the redevelopment of Brandywell Stadium is to be named after the late Mark Farren, the former Derry City striker who died earlier this month after a long battle with cancer.
Since the sad passing of the 33-year-old, there have been widespread calls for the new stand to be named in honour of the Candystripes’ all-time leading goalscorer.
Late this afternoon, members of Derry City and Strabane District Council – owners of the Brandywell - voted unanimously to name the stand after the Greencastle man.
Speaking at the meeting Mayor, Cllr Elisha McCallion, said would it commemorate an “amazing man” in a “dignified way.”
Adding he was a “legend” and a “true gentleman,” Cllr McCallion said he and his wife, Terri, had shown “great courage” in his battle with cancer.
