Derry burglary suspect arrested trying to board Liverpool ferry

Court refuses bail for man with 102 previous convictions after DNA matches blood at scene
A man who was a suspect in a domestic burglary due to a DNA link was arrested as he tried to board a ferry to Liverpool Derry Magistrate's Court heard today.
David Nixon (33) of Kinsale Park in Derry was charged with entering a premises as a trespasser with intent to steal on April 15.
The court heard that police received a report from Kinsale Park about a burglary.
They found a glass panel smashed in a back door and there was a metal spanner there police believed was used to break the window.
Blood was observed on several areas in the house and one of them was on a light switch.
An analysis of this sample linked it to the defendant by DNA.
An alert was put out for Nixon and the court heard that on June 22 Nixon was detected trying to board a ferry to Liverpool and was arrested.
He told police he was watching the house for the owner who was currently in custody but another person said he was watching the house not Nixon.
Bail was opposed due to the fact that Nixon had 102 previous convictions and 14 breaches of bail.
A police officer said that the defendant had 'a propensity for dishonesty' and had been in the criminal justice system for the past 17 years.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said the bulk of Nixon's offences were for public order and low level thefts.
Bail was refused and Nixon was remanded in custody to appear again on July 16.
