Tomorrow night’s pre-season friendly between Derry City and Ballymena United at the Ballymena Showgrounds has been called off as a mark of respect to former Candy Stripes striker Mark Farren who died yesterday.

The funeral of the 33-year-old, who lost a brave battle against cancer, will take place tomorrow.

Derry City have revealed they are to retire the club’s number 18 jersey worn by the Greencastle man during his time at the Brandywell.

A minute’s applause had been arranged to take place at tomorrow night’s game.

However, it is most likely to feature at all of Derry’s future home games.

Meanwhile, there are increasing calls for the new stand proposed as part of the redevelopment of Brandywell Stadium to be named after Mark who has been widely described as a “legend.”
