Derry Clipper future in hands of local councillors

Any future involvement of Derry in the Round the World Clipper Yacht Race will be decided by local councillors, it has emerged.
It comes after organisers of event, Clipper Ventures, confirmed there were no plans to include the city in any future events once this year’s race comes to a finish in London at the end of July.
Before that, tens of thousands of people are expected in Derry to greet the Clipper fleet as it arrives into the River Foyle for the Foyle Maritime Festival which runs from Saturday, July 9 until Sunday, July 17.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is currently involved in a three-race contract with Clipper Ventures.
A spokespersonfor Derry City and Strabane Council said any future involvement with the race would be a decision taken by its councillors.
“Council has a very strong and positive working relationship with Clipper Ventures that is focused on sharing the benefits of the race and the profile it brings by working closely to showcase our city and region,” the spokesperson said.
“The Council is delighted to have been included in this prestigious race and to have our city’s name travel the length and breadth of the world telling our story.”
The spokesperson added: “Any plans to be involved in any future races with Clipper Ventures is a matter for members of Derry City and Strabane District Council to discuss and decide.
“Council will continue to work closely with Clipper Ventures with regard to this race and to explore any future opportunities that may arise.
“Council’s main priority moving forward is to continue to promote our maritime offering and to include the Foyle Maritime Festival in our Festival and Events Strategy.”
