Four months in prison suspended for 18 months

A woman has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today for a series of public order offences.

Lucy Mary Ann Richardson (25) of Claremont House in Derry was convicted in her absence of disorderly behaviour, resisting and assaulting police on January 7 this year.

The court heard that police were called to Claremont House to a report of a disturbance at 10.45am.

Shouting could be heard and banging at doors and the reporting person was told they were 'a dead man walking.'

When police attended the defendant ran to another flat and began banging on the door and shouting abuse.

Richardson was asked to calm down and refused and then lashed out at officers trying to strike them on the face.

The defendant was restrained and continued to struggle and had to be carried out of the building.

She tried to scratch one officer who was holding the handcuffs scratching his hands and arms.

Defence counsel Fergal McCormack said initially his client had tried to calm things down but then things 'escalated very quickly'.

He said she intended to appeal her convictions and added she had suffered 'significant injuries'.

Richardson was sentenced to four months in prison suspended for 18 months.
