Man must 'observe a curfew, wear a tag and have no Internet enabled device'

A man who was in custody on drug charges was granted bail at Derry Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (July 11).

The man who had been granted anonymity has been in custody for the last six months.

A police officer told the hearing today that police were opposed to the granting of bail.

He told the court that the defendant has 88 previous convictions and 23 of them are for drug related charges.

The court heard that the defendant had breached bail on these charges on ten occasions on one occasion from December 7 until January 2 disappeared as the officer said was 'was on the run for 27 days.'

The officer said that there was a high risk of re-offending and also the risk of breaching his bail.

The court heard that when police stopped a car in connection with the original charges they believed that the man deliberately damaged his phone to try and stop police accessing it.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the original charges stemmed from a car being stopped with the defendant and another person and drugs were found.

The defendant asked to speak and told the court that after he was granted bail his flat was 'destroyed' by the New IRA.

Bail was granted on condition he observed a curfew, wear a tag and has no Internet enabled device.

The man will appear again on August 3.
