Elliott was facing charges of a domestic nature and had tried to contact the woman in the case by phone

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man who had 26 breaches of bail and 69 previous convictions had been given a final warning by the District Judge.

Dean Elliott (26) of Spencer Road in Derry appeared charged with breaching his bail by being in contact with the alleged victim in the case.

A police officer told the court that Elliott was facing charges of a domestic nature and that on February 11 the woman in the case reported that the defendant had tried to contact her by phone.

She said she received a call from a number she did not recognise and heard Elliot's voice, which she recognised, say 'you know who this is'.

A police officer told the court that this was Elliot's sixth breach on this charge and he had already been given a final warning.

He said that Elliott had been told he was not even to 'nip out for a cigarette'.

The officer said that there was 'zero chance' of Elliott abiding by his bail conditions.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the previous breaches had involved curfew breaches but that this breach 'was more significant'.

He said that the defendant deserved credit for accepting that he did try and contact the woman.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said that the Resident Magistrate had made clear that Elliott had received his final warning and he was bound to respect that.

He refused bail and remanded Elliott in custody to appear again on February 14.
