Derry 3-10
Galway 1-11
Two second half goals catapulted Derry to a first win over Galway for 14 years and secured their fourth league victory in as many games.
Victory came at a cost though with Conor Doherty forced off before the interval with a knee injury picked up earlier in the half. Derry, with the wind at their back, shot into a 1-1 to 0-0 with Eoin McEvoy’s third minute goal.
Glass and McGuigan were on target before a Finnerty free opened Galway’s account.
Galway had a half goal chance went Cathal Sweeney’s flick was blocked by Ryan Scullion after Dylan McHugh’s shot came down off the post.
Derry lost Brendan Rogers to a black card and conceded a goal minutes after when Céin D’Arcy shot to the bottom corner.
Finnerty added frees but Derry were always able to keep their noses in front with a third Glass point a Brendan Rogers effort for a 1-7 to 1-5 interval lead.
The momentum swing came early in the second half with a Shane McGuigan penalty after Diarmuid Baker was hauled down by Kieran Molloy.
Galway when lost Sean Mulkerrin to a black card with Paul Cassidy palming home Derry’s third goal to seal victory.
Derry welcome All-Ireland champions Dublin to Celtic Park on Saturday while Galway’s next test is Sunday’s trip to Clones to take on Monaghan.
