Derry judge says man might not 'be a suitable candidate for the human race'

District Judge Barney McElholm's comments came in the case involving Jason Curry (46) of Mount Street in Derry who appeared charged with a series of domestic offences
A judge has said that not only is a Derry man an unsuitable candidate for bail he might not 'even be a suitable candidate for the human race'.
District Judge Barney McElholm's comments came in the case involving Jason Curry (46) of Mount Street in Derry who appeared charged with a series of domestic offences.
Curry is charged with assaulting a female occasioning her actual bodily harm on May 17.
He is also charged with non fatal strangulation against the same woman, improper use of the telecommunications network on May 16, threatening to kill her on the same date, criminal damage to a shirt, stealing medication and harassment.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
The court heard that the woman had reported to police that her partner, Curry, had been stealing her medication.
She also said that when she ended the relationship he told her son he was going to 'choke her to death'.
On May 17 the woman said she was giving a lift to Curry's mother and the defendant got into the car and refused to leave.
She said while she was driving Curry threatened to choke her again and then grabbed her by the throat and hair while the car was still in motion.
The court heard that she managed to stop the car and Curry then ripped her shirt before opening her door and grabbing her by the throat squeezing until she thought she would pass out.
It was also said that the defendant bit her on the hand in the incident.
The officer said that Curry had 14 previous convictions involving a former partner and this relationship was only five-weeks-old.
She said Curry was only released from prison in March.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the defendant would claim that he was assaulted.
He said that there was a possibility that Curry's licence would be revoked.
Judge McElholm said that Curry was a 'disgrace' and completely unsuitable for bail.
Curry was remanded in custody to appear again on June 13.
