A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with assaulting a woman and possession of drugs.
Daniel Kelly (36) of Great James Street in Derry was charged with, on June 30, possession of pregabalin and, on June 23, assaulting a woman after police were called to the scene where a female had been attacked in her garden.
Police responded to the call from a third party and found both Kelly and the woman with extensive scratch marks on their faces.
The court heard the woman refused to say what had happened but nodded in Kelly's direction when police asked. A third party also claimed to have seen Kelly attack her.
Police later found a number of pregabalin tablets in Kelly's pocket when searching him.
The court heard that Kelly's last conviction was in December 2022.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the offence wasn't a domestic issues in the true sense of the word as he wasn't in a relationship with the alleged victim.
He added that Kelly didn't have a background of domestic offences.
Bail was granted and he will appear again on July 25.
