Derry man charged with one punch assault refused bail

Martin Sheridan (30) of Spencer Road in Derry was charged following the assault that was said to have occurred on September 6 this year in Sackville Street
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court for a bail application following an assault that left a man in serious condition in the hospital.
Martin Sheridan (30) of Spencer Road in Derry was charged following the assault that was said to have occurred on September 6 this year in Sackville Street.
Police were initially alerted to a man unconscious on the ground and the court heard later identified Sheridan and Courtney Temple as being involved via CCTV.
Sheridan was said to have punched the man, knocking him to the ground where he hit his head, leaving him with severe brain injuries.
Police objected to bail as they said that Sheridan has only been out for a week on similar charges when this incident happened and they believed there was a risk of him reoffending.
Defense solicitor Seamus Quigley called the situation a 'classic one punch case' and said that drugs and alcohol were at the center of it.
He also added that Sheridan waited with the injured party until the ambulance arrived.
District Judge Barney McElhom said that it was an 'extremely serious case' and refused bail.
