Adam Toner (37) of Great James Street is charged with breaching his bail and charges of possession of drugs and criminal damage

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates Court charged with breaching his bail and charges of possession of drugs and criminal damage.

Adam Toner (37) of Great James Street in Derry was charged after police searched his address on Great James Street and found Toner to be lethargic and slurring his words. Police also discovered a number of pregabalin tablets and cannabis.

While in police custody the court was told that Toner made multiple attempts to damage furniture and smeared food on the camera in the cell.

He was declared medically fit but deemed too violent to be interviewed.

Toner was already on bail for three different cases, including criminal damage in October and possession of class A, B and C drugs in February.

The court heard that Toner has 65 previous convictions, including 19 for drug offences.

Bail was opposed as police had no confidence he would abide by any conditions.

Defence solicitor Chris Logue said that, until recently, Toner had been regularly attending meetings Woodley House to help with his drug addiction and that he claimed to have been spiked.

District Judge Barney McElhom said that Toner had 'abided by his bail for a period' but had 'spectacularly breached' it and denied bail. He will appear again on March 22.
