Derry man jailed days after prison release following assault of female

Darren McGrath (20) of no fixed abode pleaded guilty to the charges that occurred on May 16
A man who was released from prison 'a matter of days ago' has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for assaulting a female and threatening to kill her.
Darren McGrath (20) of no fixed abode pleaded guilty to the charges that occurred on May 16.
The court was told that police received a report from a female that she had been walking with a group of friends on the Strand Road and had been approached by the defendant who verbally abused her threatening to 'slit her throat'.
He then slapped her on the back of the head.
McGrath was arrested and made a no comment interview.
Defence counsel Stephen McNicholl said his client accepted full responsibility for his actions.
He said that the defendant had spent a long time in care and was finding it difficult to adjust to life outside that environment.
The barrister said that this had not been easy and McGrath was caught in 'the revolving door or in prison out of prison'.
District Judge Suzanne Rice said the defendant choose to find himself in the revolving door of prison.
She imposed a sentence of three months in prison.
